Faith is usually a cover for laziness

Faith people want sceptics to try their version of faith before they condemn it or consider it worthy of ignoring.  Try it before you knock it.  That is a recipe for intellectual laziness.

M Scott Peck in the The Road Less Travelled speaks of ordinary laziness which is just "a passive failure to love".  People like that are an example of nonlove but he says they are not evil.  He says truly evil people refuse to do the work of helping others.  So one is just a habit and the other is a choice.  If you believe evil is banal then good is not banal and so evil must be lazy.  It is trying to take a bad shortcut to achieve something.

Some believers don't want to prove religion or God for they think that they can impress God by serving him without being sure. this is a form of self-aggrandizement. If faith is just that then anything goes!

Faith does not appear in a vacuum. It is fed by society and culture. The family, and social and political institutions are the main causes. And we must remember that what seems to be faith cannot really always be faith. Many people play a role to avoid conflict or judgment from others. Faith is a cause of some religions. Many religions are not about faith but faith will show itself in them. Take, for example, Gnostics. They condemn faith in the name of seeking some mystical knowledge. Then what happens is that faith comes along pretending to be knowledge or the Gnostic ends up with faith in more things than she or he wants to have faith in!

It is nonsense to say that nobody with true faith does anything harmful to others. That would imply that Jesus with his hurtful tongue was not a man of faith!  And what about his refusal to say anything against the unjust and heinous and barbaric Roman oppression of his people even his own relations?  Faith condemns doing harm but does not necessarily stop it or prevent it. It should always be willing to ask if it is in any way to blame.

What does show there is no true faith is wilful heresy or cherry-picking of doctrines.

Faith in one God as opposed to many gods leads to you seeing his hand in all things every day. Why? Simply because he is the only God. The simplicity works well which is why one-God religions tend to replace polytheistic ones. So what happens is faith changes your vision, how you see things, and thus you will think you see God's hand in all things even when it cannot be there. You think God's hand stopped Ann from having an abortion when in fact she had one and is going to say she had a miscarriage. It is all in the spiritual eye of the beholder.

You will resort to faith when:

You cannot get enough certainty

Don't want to get enough certainty. In that case you will not want to learn just in case you find you don't need faith or belief.

Certainty is hard to get but people fake it so they clearly just don't want to get certainty.
